SELF STUDY

How to Understand God (HUG)

The monthly focus is a written excerpt taken from one of Jim and Brian’s talks, with a link to listen to the entire talk. In holding to a one-pointed focus on Spirit, each month we post a new written excerpt by either Jim or Brian. The worldwide monthly focus on Spirit helps us collectively deepen our understanding of God.

Full Excerpt ~ Jim Gordon

Here are some things that you might want to write down and remember because these are tools, if you will, that will help you to empower yourself.

(Number one) Be aware of your inner voice, listen and take note of what you say to yourself each day and discover who “that yourself” is. The first “that yourself” may be your mother, it may be your father, it may be whoever. And you’ll have to discover until you find the True Self that you are.

So listen and take note of what you say to yourself each day and each moment of each day. That means, carry a little journal around with you, just a notebook or something. When something comes up, you can write it down and you can then work with that later if you don’t have time in that moment. Don’t wait until seven or eight o’clock in the evening to write down what you got at nine o’clock this morning because you’re not going to remember it, because you’re going to have ten thousand other things spoken to you in that time and you’re going to go, “Now, what was that at 9:15?” You won’t remember it. Well, I don’t want to affirm that. You will remember it, if you want to remember it.

(Number two) Be aware of your outer voice and the outer voices around you. Listen and take note to what you say to yourself and to others and what others say to you.

Number three, take responsibility to begin changing what is said inside and outside, and this is important, and begin voicing what you do want in your life. No longer go and say, “I don’t want this in my life, I don’t want that happening in my life,” but rather start stating what you do want in your life. Begin to learn the process of speaking what you want so that you’ll create what you want.

Number four, discard and let go of ideas, beliefs, goals, environments that do not serve you either on an inner or an outer level.

(Number five) Be willing to allow inner and outer change in your life. And there will be inner and outer change. So allow it to happen. Give the Spirit inside of you permission to bring about change. You have to give permission. You know the old statement “ask and it shall be given, seek and you shall find, knock and the door shall be open”? Well, sometimes you have to open the door. You may go up and you may knock, but then you have to reach down and open it and say, “Can I come in?”

And number six, live life each moment and choose what that moment is to be filled with. You choose what you want that moment to be filled with. What kind of ideas? What kind of emotions? What kind of actions do you want happening in this moment? You’ll realize when you begin to do that, you don’t have time to worry about what I just did in the past and what I’m going to do in the next statement of the future. I can just do right now. I’m going to take care of right now and that’s all I need to do. It makes life real simple.

And number seven is be patient with yourself inwardly, outwardly, and be patient with God. Now, why do you think they would say be patient with God? How many times do we blame God for all these things in our lives? “God, why did you bring this person into my life? I don’t understand them. I don’t want them here. God, why do I have to have this job? I hate it. I’m not making the money I want. God, these three kids you gave me, why did you give me these three kids? Why not my neighbor’s? I’ll take them.” (laughter)

Be patient with God, because eventually, you’re going to realize that God is inside of you and God didn’t do this to you, you did it to yourself by giving your power away to all these other voices.

In the moment you begin to claim your power, you’ll also claim the voice of God inside. And you’ll also realize that God is there rooting you on, supporting you into what really is meant to be for you as long as you’re choosing that route. So be patient with God. That’s a very important factor to hold in your life.

Then they summarized it very, very nicely. Be aware, take responsibility, discard and let go, be willing, live life now and be patient.
